Mark Shedd, 1962 Futura

Mark Shedd has had this Falcon for about two years.  This was the last project that he and his daughter took on prior to her leaving for college in August of this year.

They worked on the car and talked about lots of things during the process. Mark says that it's a great way to engage your children in a stimulating activity as well as being very conducive to conversation while you work.

Mark's daughter drove a '66 Mustang GT fastback to high school and as you can imagine was the envy of all the boys at school.  They were even more impressed that she could converse intelligently about her car and the things she had personally done to it.

Mark found this 1962 Futura in North East Texas.  The car originally came from Colorado and had a six cylinder. They wanted a little more umph and once they got the car home they began removing the powerplant. They put her on jackstands in the barn and began to remove all the running gear. They kept the drum brakes and were able to find a donor 63 1/2 Sprint that had just gotten a Mustang II front clip and the owner was going to discard the old sprint gear. They bolted the front end components in after a thorough cleaning and replacement of bushings etc..

They then found a donor 1964 Fairlane for the rearend.  They repositioned the leaf pads etc and bolted it up. Mark also found a BW toploader  4 spd and a 289 from 1966 Mustang.  The engine had small chamber heads and they ported, polished and refitted it with a .202 intake and .194 exhaust valves, Edelbrock performer combo Cam, Intake, Carburetor and matching valve springs.

Fitment was a bit of an issue when it came to headers and so they found hi-po exhaust manifolds and routed exhaust piping so they could use the mechanical clutch linkage.

They finished the car with PPG base /clear Grabber Orange paint and used a Mach 1 scheme with black accents. They wanted a clean minimalist look and so they left off the chrome trim work.  Mark says that the car is a lot of fun to drive and is very quick.  They took it to their first show Memorial Day weekend and the " Little Bird " held her own against 100k plus street rods. She drew an amazing amount of attention. It doesn't hurt that she sounds as good as she looks and has a great stance.

The Featured Falcon!  Back by request even though quality pictures of FCA Falcons are hard to get.   I have received so many requests for it's return, I will try to find and present a new Falcon here each quarter.

If you have a candidate, send me a sample picture at: FCA@Falconclub.com
